The nominate race is restricted to southern South Africa and southern Namibia and mostly found on higher altitudes and in mountainous country. The bird pictured is a recently fledged juvenile, recognisable by its very pale eye and barring in the tail, thus not to be mistaken for a migrant Steppe Buzzard
