The canopy-formation may eliminate reflections from the water surface, enabling the egret to see more easily into the water. The function of cutting out reflections by canopy-formation close to the water surface is self-evident and clearly one advantage. However, the short duration of the canopying and foot-stirring while canopying do not uphold another hypothetical advantage of attracting prey to shelter under the umbrella. (see next photos)
