Surveyor, New York City, New York, 2010

This Gormley figure, which stands behind the ornate cornice of 162 Fifth Avenue, was shot from several blocks away with a long telephoto lens. Framed by a mass of Victorian architecture, the figure seems to be surveying the scene below. I waited for the cloud to float behind the figure, making it stand out in even greater contrast.

I was surprised to find so many figures, as well. They are not all over the city, however -- except for the figure on the Empire State Building and another on Union Square, the rest are within a few blocks of Madison Square Park. And each one differs from the others because of not only the architecture it stands upon, but also its height above the street.

I had no idea these figures were all over the city. I thought there was only one. Each one seems very different simply because of the architecture he stands upon.
