Ah, but Satchel Paige was infamous as Ben described him. He was one of the game's all-time greats but he also deserted the Negro leagues, with team mates he picked, to play for General Rafael Trujillo's team in the Dominican Republic. Trujillo was one of the cruelest dictators ever, having his opponents and critics murdered and having his military kill around 15,000 Haitian men, women and children with machetes for illegally crossing over the border to Dominican soil. This is a fascinating story about Satchel and how he ended up in the Dominican Republic:

Also, bear in mind that the word "infamous" is sometimes used as a joking term of endearment to describe someone. I don't believe that Ben was being malicious in his use of the term about Satchel.

Satchel Paige was not "infamous." Not sure why you would say that.

My Dad would take me to watch the "Miami" Marlins at Miami Stadium often. Dad was a close friend of "The Beast" (aka Jimmie Foxx or Double X). During the mid '50s Foxx was a coach for the Miami Marlins. I believe he was one of their batting coaches. In Foxx's earlier days he played for the Boston Red Sox and was a power hitter. He was a close friend of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. In 1938 he finished the season with 50 HRs, 175 RBIs, and a batting avg of .349. In '39 he ended the season with a .360 batting avg. Foxx was inducted in the baseball HOF in 1959.

Another baseball legend that played for the Marlins briefly was the infamous pitcher Satchel Paige. I recall once my Dad and I were invited into the Marlins locker room and I was allowed to visit with both Foxx and Paige. As a young boy of 9 I had no full appreciation of the two towering baseball legends I was in the midst of.

Such a shame they let the Miami stadium completely abandoned and was finally torn down in 2001.

I remember seeing the big arched grandstand roof and light posts from I-95 in the 1970s. I thought the Miami Hurricanes played baseball there.

I lived in the area when I was 12 years old and there was an entrance at the North East corner of the stadium that was for kids and it was called the "Knothole Club" Went there many times. And thanks to whomever for the postings of these great pictures.
