Black Oystercatcher

San Leandro Channel, Bay Farm Island, Alameda, CA

In the process of preening after a bath. There are only about ten thousand of these in the world. Their native habitat is the North and Central American west coast. About 500 are present in the San Francisco Bay Area using the Bay as a foraging ground and the Farallon Islands off the coast for breeding.
To see a giant bird, imagine the rock to be a mountain range.
