Thread Sealant & Fittings

My preferred thread sealant for diesel or #2 oil is Hercules Megaloc. It is diesel rated and works very, very well and also cleans up easily. It also never fully hardens which makes slight fitting adjustments in the future doable without losing the thread sealing properties. Hercules Megaloc is available at most any good plumbing supply house but there are many diesel/#2 rated thread sealants on the market. The key is to use them correctly and not be sloppy.

Does blue pipe dope smell for awhile after applied to a pipes (iron I believe) that go into an oil tank? Also does it smell when heated on the pipes that go into my oil burner? Just had a install to replace my older tank and boiler and the smell is terrible. It gets worse when the boiler runs. We can also smell it at the oil tank, so we are thinking it is the blue pipe dope. It smells like a chemical (paint thinner). We are trying to figure this out and hope the smell goes away. Thank you for giving us any thoughts you may have. ~Jeff and Holly
