Not sure exactly what the story was behind this unique paddle combination...but it did seem to work. We started watching them when we saw canoe taking a rather erratic course across the bay....it seemed they just couldn't keep headed on a straight course. As they neared, we realized they had a 'paddling challenge' and we never did figure out where they were going. Perhaps they needed to get to the nearest pub, and their big screen tv, so they could see the next Olympic event....it's questionable that they made it in time!
