Agathia Peak, Kayenta, Arizona, 2009

We stopped to photograph a famous peak marking the outskirts of Monument Valley. When I walked over to the fence, I saw that the story here rests not only in the peak itself, but even more so in the context supporting it. Using a 18mm super wideangle focal length, I compare the powerlines flying diagonally across the sky to a barbed wire fence that sweeps diagonally across the ground. The fence leads to Agathia Peak, by way of an abandoned tire. The image says more about the nature of life on the Navajo reservation than it does about the famous Agathia Peak.

I structured the image as a triangle, Carol -- the tire, peak, and tower mark the corners of it. The diagonal lines of fence and overhead power lines complement it.

Your composition makes a great triangle. The rickety fence and old abandoned tire speak volumes about the nature of the life at present of those who live there. The powerlines suggest to me the moving on into the future, perhaps in spite of tradition of lifestyle, as a necessity now to live. And the monument, small in the distance suggests lasting history, although too easily taken for granted or left behind. Perhaps I am reading too much here but to me, this image definitely tells a story of life in these parts.
