In the souq behind the the Sinan Paşa Mosque there is this old, the Bab al-Jabiyeh, named after the first settlement in the Hauran, later abandoned. It is at the edge of the Suq al-Kumeile (lice market, we have a flee market in Amsterdam). I use it as a starting point for this series. In it blocks or Roman origin are reused. It dates from 1164 with some further work that was completed in 1227. A Roman gate on this spot marked the western end of the Straight Street.
