Washington state has its' share of wild turkeys and we saw a number of them in the Tenaway area, just east of Snoqualmie Pass. Watching the roosters strut and display their colours was a real thrill. Wild Turkey facts: The Wild Turkey was a very important food animal to the native peoples of North America, but it was eliminated from much of its range by the early 1900s. Since 1960, when the first wild-trapped turkeys were introduced into Washington State from Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming, turkeys have maintained naturally reproducing populations in much of the forested portion of eastern and southwest Washington. As the result of an aggressive introduction program that began in the mid-1980’s, Washington’s wild turkey populations have experienced substantial increases in density and distribution. ~ Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
