Judgment, Newburyport, Massachusetts, 2009

The sense of taste is at very heart of dining. Here a woman uses that sense as she evaluates a forkful of pie at a community event. Good? Not so good? I leave the answer to her and to my viewers.

I think she looks away because she wants to think about how it tastes, not how it looks. but then what do I know? Thanks, Alina -- the expression is the whole point here. It looks very judgmental, as it should.

Because she is not looking at her plate, she looks like she doesn’t care what she eats. I like the expression on her face.

I can see her brain working, experiencing aroma, taste, texture and flavor all in one bite. It's a decisive moment indeed.
