I love parades. And if I'm anywhere near a small town when a parade is scheduled, I'll do nearly anything to get there to see it.
I love homemade floats, waving politicians riding tractors, kids on bikes with balloons tied to the handlebars and playing cards clipped to their wheels, dogs with dresses, waving members of the VFW, tow trucks with crepe paper hanging from the rear view mirrors, and fire trucks with flashing lights are loud horns.
Last year we attended a parade in Nahma, a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It had all of the great things that I love, but one float made me a lifetime fan of the Nahma Labor Day parade. It was a pick up truck carrying a cold, sweaty, half barrel of draft beer. Cups of cold beer were being poured and rushed to the people watching from the sidewalks.
Now that was a great parade float...and that was a great parade that should be voted into the Small Town Parade Hall of Fame.
Roscommon has a great annual 4th of July parade. I wouldn't miss it.
