As well as laying eggs, female aphids are able to reproduce by parthenogenesis - they give birth to smaller versions of themselves (all female) without the need for fertilization.

Nice macro, I have seen the red ones here. Generally gardeners over react to their presence, when all that is needed is a spray of water, now and then. Commercial preparations (systemic insecticides) weaken plants and kill beneficials. V
