Install The Impeller

When you install the impeller it is important to apply a liberal amount of Glycerin or "Impeller Lube" to the pump body and the impeller. Glycerin can be purchased at any drug store for far less than it is sold as "impeller lube".

Contrary to the myths about aligning the vanes in a certain direction, it really does not matter. Just squish them and install the impeller, they will orient the minute you hit the starter button.

It is not advised to use petroleum based lube products on impellers as these greases or oils can damage and shorten the life of the impellers rubber compound.

Randal,

This is a 44B Four. Top hose is RW inlet, bottom hose is outlet to HX.

Pardon stupid question, but am I correct that in this photo of the pump with the impeller installed and the cover plate still off, the water flows left to right? I ask because I did not mark the intake end when I removed the pump from my Westerbeke 44B engine, and now I am not sure which side the raw water supply hose should be reattached. Plan B is to bolt it to engine, attach just the raw water supply hose, turn engine over briefly and confirm water is being pumped out the other side. But if not, does this put impeller blades at risk? FYI my water pump is identical to that shown.

What is your opinion of using dish washer liquid detergent instead of impeller lube as lubricant for the installation??
