How Did It Get So Clean ?

I know some will wonder how this pump went from that grungy old pump look to shiny & new looking. It's easy, I use a brass wheel on my bench grinder and burgundy colored Scotch-Brite discs on my Dremel. I clean the cover plate and pump gasket surfaces with wet sand paper and honing oil on a piece of 3/8" thick glass for a smooth surface.

Is it recommended/instructed to clean the pump to the state pictured below before the re-build?

Don't use the Scotchbrite wheel on the flat machined surface that the cover gasket goes on. You will make it look clean, but may damage the flatness and cause it to leak. A better way to clean that surface is use a file and hold it flat on the gasket surface while moving it, being careful to keep it flat and even.
