I left MACS 1 the end of June, 1957. Prior to rotating to the states I was in charge of the barracks. I had a local Japanese "papa san" who worked cleaning and maintaining it. We used gallons of creosol on the deck, always passed inspection. At the rear of the barracks, just before the hallway, there were two rooms, one on each side of the barracks. Those rooms each housed two SSgts. I had been promoted to SSgt and roomed with SSgt Clifford Lehner, the other room had SSgt Wasniak and I don't recall the other name. Upon entering through the doors (in the above picture)the barracks was open bay. On the starboard side, a little past the middle, was a section petitioned off by wall lockers. Within the petition was the area for Cpls and Sgts. There were probably a dozen or so racks. I was told that the barracks had been used by Kamikaze pilots during WWII. The window on the right side in the above picture is to the NCO of the Day room. It's where you had to sign in and out if you were on liberty. Any body know if the old building is still there?

Correction: Mag-12 is in error; it should've been Mag-11. Mag-12 was down in Iwakkuni at the time.

The staff ncos of Mag 12, I think, were always billeted in mainside. When we went to the Philipines the fall of '57 Roger was left in charge of the eastcamp Macs-1 barrack because he was a short-timer. The few who did not go on the maneuver were living there. When we returned from Corregidor, however, it seems we returned to mainside. When I left for the states in Aug/58 we were again in Eastcamp. KO

Where were the senior NCO's billeted when we were here? Where were they billeted when we were at mainside?
Was this building empty when we were traveling?

This picture is a bit sad for me . . . what happened to our signs that used to be on the outside wall over the entrance door?
