Um - but a six volt electrical system with weird fuses subject to contact corrosion. On my Dad's (the white one) I once measured more voltage drop across the starter switch than across the starter. Based on my experience, those Beetles showed the US we didn't need two-ton cars, but by today's small car standards, they were pretty marginal beasties -- especially if you liked to be warm while driving :-).
