Jean Bart was a 17th century local hero. A Dunkirk born navy captain whose numerous victories in sea battles earned him noble peerage....he is credited with capturing hundreds of ships, ending a seige of Dunkirk and, not least, with saving France from famine.
His statue in the square dates from 1848
