Monument Valley has a small "Primitive Campsite" right next to the visitors centre. This was the view from our tent, I just could not refuse a night exposure of the famous Buttes as I saw Orion rising behind! I had one shot at this with only one nights stay here, but I was rewarded with my best night exposure so far. At first I was worried about the light polution (probably from the settlement of Mexican Hat), but I now feel this actually adds to the photograph, defining the horizon and lighting the cloud in the bottom left. A good idea with night exposures is to first try a 60 second exposure to check focus and composition is correct (you could hardly see the buttes in the viewfinder). I then exposed for just 17 minutes (was supposed to be 15 but I forgot!) to keep Orion recognisable, rather than an hour and have just concentric arcs.
