Cooper's Hawk, juvenile

Merced NWR

I photographed this young accipiter on two separate occasions during the weekend, and both times thought it was a Sharp-shinned Hawk, mainly because it looked very small, and alse the head looked small and rounded to me rather than blocky. I noticed from this photo that the striping on the breast was notably narrow and dark, which is a characteristic of Cooper's, so I left it as Accipiter sp when I posted. A number of expert observers all agreed it is a Cooper's, mentioning especially the tail feathers -- shorter outer than inner, well seen in this photo -- and also the chest striping and the placement of the eye. The photo from the first observation, a poor one taken in low light, is at http://www.pbase.com/image/105923109 .
