Yellowstone National Park: Excelsior Geyser

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Although no longer the world’s largest geyser, it still discharges over 4,000 gallons of water per minute. Huge eruptions occurred in the 1880s, sometimes up to 300 feet. Those eruptions were so violent they probably affected the geysers plumbing, leading to its diminished capacity. Since the 1800s, only one brief period of eruptions occurred again in 1985 for a few days, and the eruptions were comparatively minor. Its temperature is 199°F.
