Butterfly Season
by

For us, butterfly season is in the winter when the butterflies migrate south. I changed my mind about
my weekly after taking this today. I used a Kenko extension tube with my 300.

Canon EOS 40D ,Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM
1/500s f/7.1 at 300.0mm iso320 full exif

Beautiful color capture with nice sharp focus.

The sharpness on the butterfly is awesome! When the background seems to compete with the subject for attention, I like to apply the brun tool to make it darker. This blends it into the background better.

Nice colors. Great sharpness on the butterfly.

Lovely catch, Brenda. If you get a 1.4x extender for the 300mm it will give you even more reach ( 420mm) and you will still have nice sharp images. Since you really couldn't choose your BG if you have opened it up to f/4 it would have blurred the BG alot more and made the butt standout in sharp focus alot better. Just some alternatives for this lovely shot.

The problem with the background is not because it's so busy, but because it's mostly the same color as the subject. In this case, the eye is first drawn to the bright orange patch in the lower right corner, which is not where you want the eye to go.

lots of bright and happy colors here, and the butterfly is superbly sharp.

Very nicely done Brenda, the butterfly stands out well from a busy but interesting background, lovely capture...
