Horsehead and Flame Nebula

The Horsehead Nebula has been a long-time icon in astronomy textbooks, at least the ones I can recall from the 1960s. But it's a difficult object to see, even with a large telescope and a nebula filter. The dark part, the horse's head, is known as Barnard 33. The red glow is IC 434. At far left is the Flame Nebula, also known as NGC 2024. This photo is a 75-minute exposure using a Nikon 500mm F/4 lens and a 2X teleconverter. It was taken in late March, 2005, from Harrington Beach State Park in Lake Church, Wisconsin. I used Kodak E200 film, processed normally.
