Mole National Park

Mole NP probably had the best birdng of the whole trip and at least one day of decent visibility. It is Ghana's largest wildlife sanctuary and covers nearly 5000 sq km of flat savanna. The park's only accommodation is the Mole Motel which sits on a rocky scarp above a series of waterholes giving fine views when visibility permits. The vast majority of the park is inaccessible, to the benefit of the animals, with all the drivable roads being confined to the south west corner in the vicinity of the park HQ and the Motel.
A morning walk around the waterholes produced the much hoped for Pel's Fishing Owl which catches slow moving catfish in the stagnant ponds. Other birding highlights were a Forbes's Plover, several Standard-winged Nightjars on the disused airstrip and an obliging Oriole Warbler by the Mole River bridge. A few elephants and antelope were seen but most of the animals avoid the tourist areas around the hotel.
Just outside the park entrance is the scruffy town of Larabanga which surprisingly is on the tourist trail. Its unusual white-washed mosque is reputed to be the oldest building in Ghana - its actual date is uncertain but local tradition claims it to be 1421.
