Re headlights..we needed them in Australia as most rail lines were unfenced, and livestock would often be on the track...as well as trees, drunks and other obstacles. British railways were securely fenced from the beginning, and so it was believed headlights were unnecessary. I wouldn't like to be driving into the dark at 100kmh, no matter how good the fences!

locomotives did not have headlights on br only headlamps.as a former saltley driver
the only headlight i ever saw was on the lickey banker.i dont know why headlights
were carried sorry

New to the web and just 'discovered' your superb site. Terrific memories when I lived in the UK (now in Australia). I wondered why the called the new A1 Tornado when there was a brit (70022) called the same?? why not Genesis, just my 'loose' idea as it seems it would be very appropriate. Still it's not my loco and full credit for all the mammoth effort to all concerned in building it. Good onya. If only there were video camera's around in the days of steam. Please keep up the good work -your photo's stir my thoughts on those great train spotting days in the 1957-63 era for me.
