Hi Ian, I've been checking out the competition, Brock-wise and I have to say that your badger pictures are the best on PBase, bar none.

Hi Ian...nice images. A question regarding your 100-400L lens. The images on your site look very sharp. Did you do a lot of sharpening in post production? Reason I ask, I recently purchased a 100-400L IS Canon lens and returned it because it was lacking in sharpness! I tested with IS on and off (when mounted to my tripod), and was really disappointed with the results. Anoher question. Did you have to take several shots of a subject to get that one good one. When testing my lens, this was the case, but as you know we often do not have an opportunity to get several shots. I also noticed that most of your shots were taken at f7.1 and higher, have you noticed lack of sharpness when shooting at 5.6?

I have a 70-200L 2.8 IS Canon zoom which I love. Tack sharp, but lacking for coming in tight on birds/wildlife. As you know, most of the images you shot were 350mm to 400.

I will be shooting a job in SA this fall, so i am continuing to research options, and finding few, other than the 100-400, but I am bummed by the sharpness in my tests. perhaps I need to test another 100-400?!

Your comments would be helpful, when you have a moment. The lens would be mounted on canon 20D’s.
thanks,
John

Hi - you asked about tripods. Yep I use one. I've had a cheap one for years and never used it. However getting out and doing the PAD, with so much low light and bad weather, I started using it - it's great! Helps get horizns level too. It even acted as a 'stabiliser' when I took the shot of the girls on the walls. Yes it is a hassle to carry, but I am :) Let me know how you get on..

Thanks Gilbert. The animals in Captive Life are all in zoos or sanctuaries. The ones in Wildlife are just that, wild!

Welcome to PBase Ian!

I enjoyed your wildlife shots. For me, the Eden Project Gallery works best of all - particularly the composition of CRW_2457_RJ.jpg.

Good luck with the new Canon kit. This is a pretty good start.

regards,
