The Peppermint Tree

Cairngorm, Scotland.

This little tree is like a magnet to me. It is situated just off the the Cairngorm Ski resort road as it approaches the summit. It is very difficult to get a good photograph of it and my best opportunities seem to occur in winter with a light dusting of fresh snow. The fresh greens of the young pines show through the colour of peppermint, being so diluted by the thin covering. As the trees lower down receive less snow they are a darker green and thus the little tree seems to exhibit sufficient contrast even in this very muted light. For me it is the reddish browns of the bark of this twisted little tree that add that gentle but much needed injection of colour.

Great Ian. I can almost taste it. Perfect snow cover except for the ski resort!
