Frigid

Loch A Chroisg, Achnasheen, Scotland

Probably the coldest I have ever been and might ever be. Baltic does not even begin to describe the coldest temperatures of minus 27 degrees celcius with freezing mist hanging over the loch so cold that it became painful to breathe. How odd then to find the loch wasn't frozen but instead gave a beautiful reflection of the plunging scree on the far side. The scene has surprising complexity brought about by the sweeping lines of collapsed grasses buried under thick rime which was visibly crystallising out of the air whilst I was working there.

Perfect title for a marvellous winter scene. Lovely composition V

The temperature doesn't particularly scare me (once one has experienced minus 54 F (-48C), -27 seems not totally unreasonable), although I'm sure with the mist it felt colder than it was. A few more days of that temperature and I'm sure the loch will begin to ice over.

What a scene! Would love to come across a frost like that!

How lucky we are to have you, out there in that perishing, piercing cold, capturing this beauty for us.
Four seconds exposure at night, under a big moon, I am thinking.
(Go home to bed and warm up.)
