Turquoise Cove

Clashach Cove, Moray, Scotland.

This remarkable little beach near Hopeman is one of my favourite places to be during the summer months. In June, July and August, the sun shines directly into the bays at sunset and warm light filters across the pale rocks turning them to gold, but not on this occasion. This time a heavy summer storm is billowing over Inverness and the sky is purple with rage. Oddly this has given rise to incredible luminosity because directly above my head is a huge white cloud pumping white light down over the sea and pebbles, the long exposure was used in conjunction with a polariser to emphasise the clarity of the turquoise water and the pebbles can clearly be made out below a moderately turbulent sea.

I like the sense of motion and contrasts in this one. It does feel like it would be a more expressive image if it was a wider format to get at the sense of width and scale here. Part of that might be the brightness as the left edge and the contrast around the rock on the right edge that draws the eye. That gives me the sense that the frame is like a window frame and I want to open the window to stick my head out to be able to see the rest of it all. For a viewer, the expectation is that Grandeur is "wide", as in "turn your head to take it all in" kind of wide. With the digital age and all of it's tools at our disposal, that is easily accomplished anymore. I understand the comfortable sense of "discipline" that the 4x6 format has embedded itself into the way you see things, but as a philosophical question, is that an advantage or limitation? It's not really an equipment limitation in the age of digital tools anymore. Just some thoughts for you.
