Indoor tests were done on a tripod at about 1 m distance and about 30 cm distance, which is close to the closest focus distance. The autofocus target was a small card with the photo of a tire and the Toyota logo perpendicular to the sensor plane. A tape measure was angled 45 degrees to the card with the numeral "5" near the "10" even with the card.
The outdoor tests were done handheld, but shutter speeds were very fast. The brick wall was angled about 45 degrees to the lens axis to show up any backfocus or frontfocus problems, with the focus point about 3 m from the camera.
Photos were all taken with soft in-camera sharpening and no sharpening in post processing. All photos are 100% crops.
The lens is rather soft at full aperture, and even better at f4.0 than f2.8; however, compared to the DX Nikkor 18-70mm "kit lens" set at 50mm, it's better at f2.8 and much better at f4.0 than the kit lens at f4.5
