A few kilometres from Prambanan stands another remarkable, large complex of Buddhist temples known as Candi Plaosan. The main group (Plaosan Lor) has a pair of large, identical two-storey sanctuaries, with a false third storey above. Unusually, rectangular windows illuminate the three internal rooms, in each of which a pair of large Bodhisattva images flank a platform where a bronze Buddha is believed to have been located. This pair of temples is surrounded by 58 chapels and 116 stupas arranged in three rows – now mainly a jumble of stones although further restoration is currently under way.
