What is there to say about Machu Picchu that has not already been said? None of the photographs or films you may have seen can do justice to the reality. I suppose what is so remarkable – no, unique – about the place is its location. Only the human brain can grasp the staggering beauty of the landscape, and the vision of the Inca builders who chose this spot to create their masterpiece. Film can never capture the exquisite splendour of the ruins cascading along the ridge between the two peaks of Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu, the almost sheer drop into the meandering Urubamba river 400 metres below, and the surrounding mountain ranges that form such a magnificent backdrop to the whole picture. Even if the ruins were not there, this would still be one of the world’s biggest and greatest panoramas.
