Thou wast not born for death...
14 June 2007 (350)

Northwood, Middlesex

Although this napping collared dove often annoys me throughout the morning
with its rather annoying, much-repeated "oo-OOO-oo" phrase, I have rather a soft spot for it
-- especially when it's sleeping outside my window, in the afternoon, after having a good clean!

It's also led a rather remarkable (and charmed) existence.
Firstly, its sibling died, when an egg was blown from the nest;
and then one of its parents was savagely murdered by a raven:
who -- with the evil encouragement of a pair of magpies --
went on to dismember and eat the poor thing.

For a while, we doubted if the other parent would return;
but a few weeks later, it appeared with a young chick in tow...
-- now looking quite grown-up!

That's why OW's quote relates to Middle sex... ;-)
This Oo-ooo-Oo was also a very familiar sound for me as a kid, and I remember discovering one day where it was coming from.... as you did. Nice capture.

I think we all turn into our parents, eventually, don't we?!
What is it Oscar Wilde said...? "All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his."

My Dad used to hate these in the morning (i've turned into my Dad). 05-30 "Oo-Ooo-Oo" Wakes me up every time. They are bonny birds though and I really love the way they are always together. :-)
