From the National Trust guidebook: The 6th Earl considered the medieval church too close to the house, and so demolished it. He decided to rebuild on high ground 500 metres to the north-east. 'Capability' Brown produced a classical design in 1758, but, probably on the advice of his friend Sanderson Miller, the 6th Earl opted for Gothic. Brown was almost certainly responsible for designing the exterior, which is dominated by the west tower.
