April 28, 2006: Soldier Beetle

Windsor, ON Canada

I was getting ready to process today's photos, when this bug landed on my desk.
I thought he was a firefly at first but on closer examination (and thanks to bugguide.net)
I found out he was a Soldier beetle
Family: Cantharidae, Genus: Podabrus.

Oh, if you can handling manual focusing and your subjects will let you get close enough, the Canon MPE-65 is a VERY good macro lens with up to a 5:1 magnification. The lenses I noted in the reply below are all 1:1 magnification auto-focus lenses and you don't have to get as close to the subject.

AG: I would recommend the following lenses for macro, based on quality alone:

Canon 180mm f/3.5
Sigma 150mm f/2.8
Sigma 105mm f/2.8
Tamron SP90mm f/2.8

I own both the Tamron 90 and the Sigma 150 and the Sigma is clearly the sharper of the two but the Tamron is a great lens. The image athttp://www.pbase.com/hmetal/image/47612842 was done with the Tamron.
