Star Ferry Central Pier - Last Night

The 48-year-old world-famous Edinburgh Place "Star" Ferry Pier bids farewell to Hong Kong at midnight on 11 November 2006. The pier will remain as a historic structure after the last ferry makes its voyage across the Victoria Harbour.

The new pier is being moved 300m North towards the Kowloon (nowhere near TST East - you're thinking about the wrong side of the harbour!).
The historic old pier and clock will NOT remain as an historic structure. They will be demolished to make way for a 6-lane highway and are a disgraceful example of the current HK government's short-sighted planning policies that pander to commercial developers. Over 5 hectares of the harbour will be reclaimed (filled in) in an attempt to implement an unproven solution to increased traffic congestion in the Central area.
The ferry company expects up to a 30% drop in passenger number as a result of the extra walk required to reach the new pier and, guess what, they will all now use the roads instead of the ferry...

wow...so sad to see the old clock tower go off. So is the new pier now open? Which side is it on? Toward Tsimshatsui East? Do they plan to tear down the old clock tower too? Thank you for being there to show us this historical moment in HK history.
