This is a PIRIS. One variety, that I have in my community garden here in the Bronx (Riverdale), is called Mountain Fire. The new growth comes out red, then fades to green. They're quite long-lived, and will eventually grow to between 5 - 7 feet tall. There are some at the NYBG nearly 100 years old. After the flowers fade, some pretty little berries come out.
