A wildebeest calf only a few days old. This was one
of the most poignant moments of our safari. The
wildebeest mothers will only feed their own calf so
if a calf is separated from mom during one of the
herd's periodic stampedes it will die of starvation
or be quickly killed by predators.

This little guy was alone for the second day so we
knew he was an orphan. The guide made a 'waaagh' sound
which sounds similar to that of a wildebeest and this
little fella ran up to the jeep expectantly. He was
imprinting on us and for a moment I thought he would
try to suckle on the door handles of the jeep. When
we started to drive off he started bawling and ran after
us as fast as he could until we speeded up. There was
nothing we could do to save him, his fate was sealed when
he separated from his mother.

I told the driver "if we see another lone calf please don't
make the wildebeest call and bring them over. It's too sad."
