Founded in the 4th century, added onto in the 13th through the 18th centuries. Among others, it houses the remains of St. Jerome, the writer of the Latin Vulgate. The church is a patriarchal basilica, meaning that its altar is dedicated to the use of the Pope or his representative. Several popes are interred here as well.
It was a few blocks from our hotel and we took a peak, not knowing any of the above. Like many churches we were to visit, we were overwhelmed by the art and archetecture of the building. Michaelangelo designed one of the chapels.
