Mirpur 2

Mirpur district comprises partly plain and partly hilly areas. Its hot climate and other geographical conditions closely resemble those of Jhelum and Gujrat, the adjoining districts of Pakistan. The people of this area are basically farmers. Since the 1960s, a large number of people from this district have gone abroad , especially to the United Kingdom and the Middle East, for economic reasons. As such they are today the major foreign exchange earning source for Azad Kashmir and Pakistan. Around 50,000 people were moved from this district in the mid-sixties to make way for the construction of Mangla Dam. Most of these people settled in new Mirpur whilst some moved to Pakistan and the UK. These photos were taken in 2001.

hello every budy im Aruna frm J&K i've many times listend d true stories frm my grandfather that around 70-80 yrs back my ancestors(grndfather n his ancestors) used to live thre n they were very rich they even owns a beautiful banglow thre. but during the partition mother of my grandfather n his two brother died. they leaved thre properties, bussiness and everything............ what they take along with them is just the painful n unforgetable memories............ so guys thats y im intrested in MIRPUR city. i know everybudy have thre own way of thinking but ultimately who suffer we people n U! Very impressive Gallery. I love khari sharife.. To be precise, place called Khan Abad. I could n't disagree with SAANI. No doubt it is the most beautiful part of the world. Just a little suggestion, if you can add a very historic building into your gallery next time when you visit the area. It is 17th century building called 'JEERAH' (Hindu Temple) near Dadyal. Although it is covered by Mangla Dam water most of the year. However you can go and visit it when the water levels are low, usually between February and June. Perhaps you can make your website more attractive if you write a bit about Mirpur history, its people and economy (even though everyone in UK knows about Mirpur's economy

I have spent quite alot of time in chattro village A.K., as that is where my family are from, as i am british born it was hard for me to see,at first, what i could really learn from my village. I think people should look above the shortages that they come across and try to realise that if, our elders had not migrated due to the flooding of old mirpur, we would have grown up in the villiges that are now under water. The history of the dam flood is really upsetings as well as intresting.

Dear Nasir If you d like to know the history of Mirpur/ Dadyal before 1947, then I would suggest you read Professor Wahid Qureshi's book (Mirpur before 1947). There is another side of mirpur. A large community of Hindu mirpuris in Jammu. these people migrated to Jammu in 1947. They have maitained a strong mirpuri identity. Lot of them identify themselves as Kotli walas. They speak the mirpuri language and marry preferably within the community. they are nostalgic about Mirpur/Kotli and would like to visit the place. In Jammu and Delhi where they migrated after 1947, they struck to each other. In Jammu they live in Rehari colony/Bakshi Nagar/New Plot areas and in Delhi they live in Amar Colony. Near Bakshi Nagar, they have named a chowk 'Mirpur Chowk'. Rekha chowdhary

We met the both brothers in Birmingham last week in a funeral. we have great family friendship with them. Regarding your question about the history of KHANABAD, I am sure you got the answer. It is true that Khan Muhammad donated land free of charge (fi sabilillah) to local people affected by the DAM in 1960's and thats how Khan Abad came into existance. Hey Guys, check KHANABAD'and even your family houses back home from Space on Google Earth. Its fantastic (a bit scarely too when you think the big brother is watching you every where).

salam faisal and everyone who is reading .The history behind when khanabad was coined was in the 1960's when a person named Mohammed khan from pind khurd jaralla-na-mora gave his own Land fee-sabeelillah to the local people who had no place, in due time local people started calling it khanabad out of respect and eventually busses started stopping at khanabad town.I hope that answers your question.Things were just done differently in those days. The local elections chakswary ,colony,panyam AJK have finished now it looks like chaudry majid has done it again.

Quality site - my family is from Panyam - have been there twice (97 and 2000) and im going in a couple of weeks time - loved it when i was last there and im sure it will be just as good! its pretty amazing hearing ppl talk about such familiar places

Hi I'm from chhatroh and I love the place. Everything is so good about it. The feeling of waking up, sleeping. When you go there, u realise there is more to life then getting married to someone nice and having a good job. But I think it is hard living there permanently, as apposed to a 2 month visit. I think we underestimate the work people do their to feed they families, some people just get 100 or 200 rupees a day, which is equilant to £2, for a living. We should be so lucky that we get the chance to go they now and then and explore the beautiful place. Maybe more needs to be to done to make sure the quality of life, for permanent residence is good. When I was in Pakistan (june last year), there were talks about creating new colonies in Hamid Abad for the affecties of the "Damn Dam". What do you think about moving in the new area? I know moving houses back home is just not as simple as it is in UK. There are alot of emotional attachments involved there. I must say my family having been living in UK for a long time would n't feel comfortable seeing their houses/ belongings been drowned to lit a few more lights in Musharaf's palace. What are your views Nazeeah and every one else???

Salaam to everybody. Recently came accross this site. Beautiful photos and nice comments from fellow kashmiris. My family are from Chattroh. I was last in Pakistan in October 2003, stayed for a month and have fantastic memories of the people and places. I am going again next week to chattroh/dadyal, will try to add some of my own photos to this site. I am also going to visit the earthquake affected areas to pass on money collected from family and friends. Do any of you know of any good maps of the azad kashmir area. I have found a couple of maps on the net but they are not very detailed. It would be a great help if any one knows of any maps. Khadim Hussain

Yes (Naveed) I heard about the earthwuake cos some of my relatives are living there, apparently it lasted 3-4 seconds and not much damage was caused in the area of Mirpur....there was alot of screaming and shouted as everyone thought it was part 2 of what had happened a few months ago...its sad!

Hi Nazeeya & AZ! I'm glad to hear from someone from my Maternal village (Panyam). To be really honest I'm not sure about the name of the village where my mother's side livein. However, I think (from a very vage memory) they livein a place called Moori Panyam, Muhallah Mistrian/ Loharan (Carpenters/ Blacksmiths), as my forfathers were Carpenters & Masons. Further more, my Grand (mother side) father's name is Mistri Alf Deen (late).The place where we livein is called Khan Abad, a tiny tiny town about three kilometers from either Chakswari and Palak.. Again the village we livein is Muhallah Mistrian (Carpenters), which is located at the brink of Mangla Dam. Like I said previously, all of my maternal uncles have been living in Birmingham UK since early 1960s and all of us from my father's side,in Leeds UK since late 50s.How about you? Can you share some family history with all of us? I think it's interesting to hear from people of their backgrounds, of which we'r all be proud of. I look forward to hear from you as well as from anyone else who is from that most beautiful part of the world.

Hi AZ. Sorry I could n't respond to your message any earlier. I was actually busy doing usual things.........You know! getting up early in the morning, going to work at 9 and finishing at five. By the time I'm back home it's around 5:45pm (I hate getting stuck in traffic) and then soon it's time for bed, ready for the hectic day to come. What do you do AZ? Oh yeh! I have lots of relatives in little villages surrounding Chakswari. My Maternal Uncles' home village is Panyam (although they are all living in Birmingham now), One of my Khala lives in Lakhora near Islam Garh, another one in Khari (Chaechiaan), lots of friends and distant relatives in Hameed Abad Kalooni, One cousin living in F2 Mirpur, and so on. How about you AZ. when did you last go back home and how long did you stay there? I was there in June/July. I took my Cousin with me this time. He went after fourteen years, and we enjoyed every single second there. my cousin says he will not leave it that long now. We are planning to go back this summer, but the plans are abit sketchy yet.... Any way! I hope to hear from you soon and take care. Any one else like to join us????

Very impressive Gallery. I'm from Mirpur Chakswari area. To be precise, place called Khan Abad. I could n't disagree with SAANI. No doubt it is the most beautiful part of the world. Just a little suggestion, if you can add a very historic building into your gallery next time when you visit the area. It is 17th century building called 'JEERAH' (Hindu Temple) near Dadyal. Although it is covered by Mangla Dam water most of the year. However you can go and visit it when the water levels are low, usually between February and June. Perhaps you can make your website more attractive if you write a bit about Mirpur history, its people and economy (even though everyone in UK knows about Mirpur's economy).
