Puget Sound King Crab

The winner of yesterday's challenge is Carol, who correctly guessed that the striking color pattern of these crabs is for the purpose of camouflage. In addition to their coloration, they can flatten themselves against a rock, hide their appendages, and become almost invisible to their principle predator, the highly intelligent Giant Pacific Octopus. I have posted few shots of these very large crabs because it is so difficult to make them out. I do admit to posing yesterday's shot against a negative background.
