Steamtown National Monument (Scranton, PA)

Steamtown is a National Park, staffed by rangers with building and land purchased by the U. S Government in the late '70's. Situated just adjacent to downtown Scranton, it is essentially the old Deleware Lackawanna yards, with the roundhouse turned into a museaum, adjacent buildings errected, and the yards themselves made suitable for pedestrians and sightseers despite the occasional moving trains. The park runs excursion trains on most summer and fall weekends, with occasion runs around the Christmas holidays.

I visited and rode the "Moscow Express" steam excursion on October 17, near the color peak in the Poconos. It is a trip well worth making....a truly enjoyable day.
