D300 vs D1H vs D50 High ISO Noise Test #2

Taken in a dark living room with only a 3-way table lamp set on "low" about 12ft away. Taken using tripod with focus point on the silver logo on the tray of the CD recorder. ISO was set at 1600, 3200, or hI-0.7, aperture at f/4.5, and shutter allowed to vary...but was in range of 1/2s to 2/3s. The best place to see the noise is to the right of the top stack of equipment.

The D1H was shot with conventional mirror lockup, the only tripod option available. The shot is with my favored 0.7 EV "equalizer boost" to match exposure in other Nikons. There is only one size JPEG to choose from.

The D50 was shot "hands off" with the infared remote control. The medium JPEG was chosen to roughly match that of the D1H.

The D300 was shot initially with "hands off" mirror lock-up and with "hands off" timer delay but I later used the latter approach since there was virtually no difference between the two techniques in sharpness. The D300 was tested with "no","low","normal",and "high" NR turned on at each ISO setting. The small JPEG was chosen to roughly match that of the D1H.

All JPEGs were "fine" quality, with no added post-processing.
