The Great October, 2011 Blizzard

It started on October 29th and ended early during the night on October 30th. About a foot of heavy, wet snow in 11 hours, driven by 25-35mph winds. Trees and powerlines down everywhere, and three million people without power in total, with a quarter of a million of those right here in Western Massachusetts. But the next day was clear and beautiful before the shoveling out started and the sun started melting snow.

These photos were taken during the 2011 Octoberfest Meme of the Nikon Cafe, and therefore were largely restricted to the manual focus 50mm and 100mm "Series E" lenses that I pledged to shoot with during October. Three of these were shot using the wide-angle end of the Tamron 17-50mm AF lens, however. The historic event just refused to fit my preconceived plans, and I couldn't imagine not shooting the shots I obtained with the wider Tamron.
