Joop's Dog Log - Friday Apr 16

Hey everybody, listen up!
Don`t want to scare you but this is important.
In my country there`s a lot of concern among dogs and their humans about
fatal cases of tick bite fever we`re suddenly having. I`m talking about Dog Malaria
or `Canine Babesiosis` or Biliary Fever or Piroplasmosis.
This week two Dutch dogs died, in The Hague and Arnhem.
Several others are dangerously ill. There are cases in Germany too.
This is an infectious disease we weren`t supposed to have in The Netherlands.
It`s common in the Mediterranian countries, Africa and South America,
but now it`s come to the North.
The disease is caused by a tiny parasite that gets in our blood through a tick on our body.
In the worst case it can kill a dog within hours! But more often dogs get very sick first.
They lose all energy, don`t eat, get a fever, their urine turns red and they get nose bleeds.
There is no vaccine. The only way to prevent this is by staying free of ticks.
So let`s be careful. No ticks!
If we remove ticks within 20 hours there`s usually -in most cases- not much danger, sais my vet.
Please be alert!
Thanks for your attention.
Have a nice day!

Joop, thanks for the heads up (as we say in the states). I will watch my dogs very close for ticks, I trust your human is very diligent about this. That is a nice harness you have.

Tick fever I know about, altho by none of those names. Here is was called Erlichea. I know because I was honored to live with a retired Guide Dog for seven years, and he was infected. My vet told me that this particular disease (and it might well be different from the one you speak of) originated in S. E. Asia and was brought to the U.S. by army dogs from Viet Nam. It`s a terrible disease but Viceroy (known as Bubba when he retired) did alright for seven years, until just after his fourteenth birthday. Not bad! Tetracycline, massive doses on a daily basis kept him pretty healthy. ...That was twelve years ago and now I am VERY careful about ticks! There are a number of products out there that work. A monthly treatment of a Frontline Plus keeps Harry and The Woo safe from fleas and flea eggs, and ticks too. Please, don`t be fooled by the cheaper stuff availabe at the supermarket. They don`t work and some of them are dangerous. Spend the bucks and keep your dogs safe! ...Good message, Joop, and I am really pleased to know that yr human is on top of this dangerous disease. He loves you, and he proves it!

And to take up just a little more space, cuz I think it`s that important - tick dips can be very dangerous and they don`t work nearly as well as the products applied to the skin, a drop between the shoulder blades, on a monthly basis. Frontline Plus is just one of them. Your vet will know. It`s a horrible disease and just the idea of your beloved dog bleeding to death, which is what happens if you don`t catch the disease in time, should scare everyone. You can tell, I feel very strongly about this. Trust me, I`ve been there. Prevent ticks!!!!!

"Luciana applies us tick and flea repellent every month. We´ve always had to be protected: we live in a tropical country and it seems parasites enjoy our climate. By the way, yesterday was flea-and-tick-controll day. We hate the smell of those `Revolution` tubes. But it is our duty. And Luciana never forgets about it. Funny how the world is getting crazy: the whether changing so quickly... tropical parasites living in Europe... social and economic disorder worldwide...
I hope ticks and fleas stay away from you, Joopie friend!" Magali

Hi Joop, yes you have to be carefull. I live in Brazil and I lost 2 dogs with this desease many years ago. Nowadays you can prevent it with tick repellent. And if the desease appears it has to be treated as soon as possible with antibiotics.
Just to let you know, among hundreds of ticks there might have one that transmits the desease. And if this tick bites your animal, that is it. Even if you remove it right away, usually it is too late. The animal will be sick. Here we usually test the blood of our dogs and cats if we suspect of anything. And if the desease is caught soon, things will end up fine!

The Frontline product nan speaks of really works... but I don`t know if it`s available in your country. (also kills fleas) There`s a mail order place in Canada that sells it, but I don`t know if they send to Europe. I`m really sorry to read that this has spread so. Scary stuff!

Joop, I`m a Frontline user, too -- the ticks can still bite you, but the bite kills them (so I guess it would prevent the transfer of the parasite). We find ticks here even in cold weather, so my humans put the stinky stuff on me on a regular basis. In fact, my humans sometimes wish they made Frontline for humans -- they get a lot of deer ticks on our woods walks in the summer, and last summer my painter human had lyme disease. (He started treatments right away, so he got better quickly.) I hope those sick dogs can get better, and I hope you can stay tick-free!

I read all the posts, and I am glad to see so many humans know about the Frontline product. I`m positive, Joop, that your human will take excellent care of you, so you don`t have to worry. I hope he tells us if that Frontline is available in the Netherlands...seems to be the best bet for the tick problem. Then we won`t worry at all about you.

common in the mediterranean? good thing you didn`t go away with your people, joop! i hope you bite those ticks before they get a chance to bite you.
(oh, and if you or your human feel like it, have a look:http://www.fotolog.net/focusgroup/?pid=7675660 ... i did it again, but things notched up a little. and now i`m to sleep i hope. it`s been a long time coming tonight. my head hurts.)

Here in N.E. U.S. we have Lyme disease carried by the bite of the deer tick. It affects dogs and humans and the symptoms are many. though in humans a bulls eye sometimes can be seen. It still remains a little understood disease, though more is becoming known. Both Marvin and Chloe have tested positive but have no symptoms and will have their urine tested shortly. The deer tick is very tiny, barely visible.
