Wooden dog,
M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California, USA.
This wooden dog ornament is a detail of a dining-room mantelpiece, designed by Herter Brothers, New York, and made by Gueret Frere, c. 1872-1873.
The life-size carving of a hunting dog sits at the foot of the mantelpiece. It was once decorating Thurlow Lodge in Menlo Park, Northern California.
Thurlow Lodge was the 50-room home on the estate of railway financier ('railroad baron') Milton Slocum Latham (1827-1882), a former California governor
and US senator. Built in 1873, the lodge and gardens were destroyed in 1942.
