A wooden door protects the entrance to The Old Vault
at Mount Vernon, George Washington's home in Virginia.
Shortly after his death on Dec. 14, 1799, Washington's body
was placed in the Old Tomb. It remained here until 1831
when it was moved to the recently completed New Tomb
nearby, as Washington directed in his will.
