Cassowary

Washington, D.C.

A Double-wattled Cassowary stands quietly in its habitat at the National Zoo
in Washington, D.C. Double-wattled Cassowaries are flightless birds and are
among the largest birds in the world, weighing as much as 128 pounds. The large
protuberance on top of the head is called a casque. Double-wattled Cassowaries
are found in New Guinea and northern Australia. Additional images
of animals in the wild and in captivity are in my Birds and Animals gallery.
