'Infinity Mirrors,' by Yayoi Kusama at the Hirshhorn Museum

On Sunday, we went to see the wildly popular Yayoi Kusama exhibit “Infinity Mirrors” at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden http://hirshhorn.si.edu/kusama/. I kid you not, this is the hottest show in Washington, and everybody wants to see it. “Timed timed passes” for the next week are available every Monday at noon and are snapped up in less than a minute from when they go online. So I took advantage of a special museum membership offer which would allow us to at least go in at our convenience (these special memberships are now sold out). It was probably the best $50 I ever spent! We got in easily, but to see the actual exhibit was incredibly time-consuming – six mirror rooms comprise the exhibit, and you are allowed exactly 20 SECONDS to view each room (the museum staff have stopwatches and throw you out once your time is up). That is, after waiting about 30 minutes in line to see each room, and only three people are allowed in at a time. The rooms are fantastical and fascinating, but you really have no time to compose anything, let alone adjust for lighting conditions, which were challenging, to say the least.

In any case, these are the photos we managed to get during our time there. They aren’t great, but we did the best we could under the circumstances. We missed the last room because we simply couldn’t wait what looked like 45 more minutes to see it, but I am hoping to return on a special members-only evening to capture it.
