I wanted to title this "Szombathely, Hungary's Roman City," but on this very short visit of about a half hour, I unfortunately didn't see any of the many Roman ruins in town. A reason to go back!
Szombathely is in western Hungary, not far from the Austrian border. It used to be known as Savaria and was founded in A.D. 43 by Roman Emperor Claudius to capitalize on the Amber Road running from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean. It looks to be a nice city with interesting buildings and attractions in addition to a lot of history to see.
SoGreat to find this gallery, I hope all is well with you I guess you are no longer in Washington I'm hoping to get here sometime in April if not, then perhaps during the summer wonderful work Helen! Happy new year!
Thank you very much for sharing your nice, short Szombathely-gallery Helen! I do hope you'll return and see more of the city - and we can meet as well. Paolo is right: I feel lucky to live here!:) V
